Kinetic Art - Guy Beckles
Kinetic Art is a form of art which contains motion. Kinetic artworks are most commonly three- dimensional sculptures that move naturally.
It is no wonder that his medium of choice is Kinetic art, he hails from the sunny island, Trinidad, renowned for its Carnival- masqueraders, costumes, rhythm - Kinetic art in its most colourful, intoxicating expression. He is the only practising Kinetic artist in the entire English-speaking Caribbean.
Upon graduation from Dartmouth College, USA with a BA in Visual Studies, he returned to Trinidad and taught high school art for several years. He now lives and work in Delray Beach, Florida. The Kinetic art that he creates is subtly influenced by my extensive travels throughout North India, North Africa, Western China and Europe. He has exhibited in London, New York, Washington DC, Boston, Toronto, Florida and my birthplace Trinidad.
His work is often reflective of a society’s dynamics - the ethnic, cultural, political and social constructs. He seeks, explores and ponders “the duality of life, the ying and yang, the ebb and flow”.
As an artist, he hopes to evoke curiosity and amazement to all ages, where the viewer asks- how, why, where and when about each piece, or smiles or remembers a childhood memory. In his own words, Guy says “I want viewers to be aware that my work is whimsical yet profound; simple yet effective; complicated yet therapeutic; soothing yet disturbing.”
